Scadoxus puniceus is an amazing South African bulb that has thrived in our garden since 2013, enduring 7 degrees F, with no protection. Starting for us in mid-May, the 15" tall thick stalks emerge from the dormant bud, opening like an exploding bright orange firework. The tropical-looking, wide, glossy foliage emerges alongside the flower stalk. Scadoxus puniceus needs open woodland conditions to thrive, preferably where the soil stays fairly dry in the winter months. It is not tolerant of a full sun location. These seed-grown plants hail from a population in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. This is a very limited introduction.
