A dry-deciduous, small to medium size tree to about 13 m tall, valued for its many uses -medicinal, forage, wood for construction- since the era of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Originally native to Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and southern Asia, today it is also cultivated in other parts of the world. It develops a straight trunk with fissured bark, a spreading, rounded, almost symmetrical crown, branches armed with gray-colored spines, pinnate foliage and very showy, perfectly round, golden flower-heads, followed by whitish-gray seed pods. Acacia nilotica tolerates heat and drought and will adapt well to many tropical and warm-temperate climates. For good germination results, seeds require scarification. Its cultivation should be attentively supervised due to its invasive potential.
