A moderately large bamboo native to rainforests to 1000 m (3300 ft.) from Taiwan and China to Myanmar with loosely clustering green culms to about 24 m (80 ft.) tall and to 10 cm (4 in.) in diameter. It is easy in cultivation in all tropical climates, prefers heavy soils and can also tolerate some drought. The culms are used for construction and for manufacturing chopsticks and other goods and supply pulp for making paper. The young shoots are edible and one of the best species for canning.
