A shrub or small tree with bluish gray, leafless and very spiny shoots, native to dry thornscrub on Madagascar and tiny Europa Island in the Mozambique Channel. Despite its uninviting habit, it makes a splendid ornamental for tropical and some warm temperate areas in USDA Zones 10 and above.
