A large, dry deciduous tropical tree to 35 m tall with smooth, pale bark and a spreading crown of bifid leaves and large, greenish white flowers. Hymenaea courbaril is widely distributed in the Caribbean, Central and South America. It is frequently planted as a shade and forestry tree for its highly desirable, very durable, brown wood that is used for furniture and flooring, for its sticky, scented, orange sap known as Animé and used for incense, perfumes, varnishes and medicinally and, finally, for its large seed pods that contain an edible, sweet, dry, somewhat smelly pulp high in protein and starch that reminds of plantain and is used in many local dishes.
