A spreading, somewhat weedy shrub that grows just over 1 m tall with silvery foliage and attractive orange red flowers followed by inflated, initially light green pods that turn reddish when mature. Lessertia frutescens is native to arid regions in southern Africa. It is an important, traditional medicinal plant and under investigation to help treat cancer and aids. An attractive ornamental plant for warm temperate and dry tropical climates it is hardy to USDA Zone 8 and above.
