This giant tree, native to the lowlands of tropical Africa, can reach a height of 40 m (130 ft.) and gains as much as 2 m (7 ft.) per year. The leaves are glossy green and sparsely serrated. It is popular as a tropical timber tree due to its rapid growth rate and useful wood, but it also makes an outstanding ornamental. The seeds germinate after 1-2 months.
