A lily-like perennial, widespread from the Canary Islands through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, where it grows in sandy soils and dunes along the seashore. In autumn, Pancratium maritimum produces large, fragrant, white flowers from an underground bulb, followed by tufts of bluish green, straplike leaves. In the drier summer months the bulb is dormant. In cultivation is makes a carefree ornamental for the mediterranean and warm temperate garden.
