A small, slender tree, usually no more than 7 m (22 ft.) tall, growing along riverbanks, in coastal dunes and evergreen forests in South Africa and Swaziland. Its trunk and branches are covered by brownish or dark gray, smooth bark when young, and as the plant matures, the bark cracks and toughens. It has oval shaped, shiny green leaves and pleasantly scented, bell-shaped creamy white flowers with pink spots in the interior, followed by round brown fruits. An excellent ornamental for warm temperate gardens.
