Tamarind tree seeds (Tamarindus indica)

Package with 40 seeds to sow, just harvested.

It is a tree native to tropical Africa, particularly Sudan, where it continues to grow wild; but it is also native to practically every country from Cape Verde to Yemen and Oman.3 It spread to South Asia, probably by human hands, and has been cultivated there for a few thousand years.1

It is currently widely distributed throughout the tropics, from Africa to Asia, Australia and the rest of Oceania.

It was introduced into Mesoamerica and South America through the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors in the 16th century. Today, Mexico, Central America and the Colombian Caribbean are among the largest producers and consumers of the fruit.

The pulp of the fruit is used as a condiment in both Asia and Latin America; in fact, tamarind is available in Indian, Chinese, Mexican and Peruvian stores around the world. The pulp of a young fruit is very acidic, and therefore recommended for many dishes, while ripe fruits are sweeter and can be used in desserts, drinks or as an aperitif.

Tamarind is recommended to treat kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and fluid retention. Thanks to its important fiber content, the tamarind fruit is an excellent remedy for those who suffer from constipation or slow digestion.
