3. Background
• C4 photosynthesis is more
efficient and has better water
use efficiency (WUE)

• Agriculture increases strain in world
water use
4. Background
• C3 and C4 plants have different WUE
• Questions:
- Are there differences across C4
plants?
- Can we use them to reduce the
strain in water resources?

Northeast-Brazil is in the Drought polygon (term created by the government due to recurrent dry periods).
Water loss through transpirationDifferent plants different degrees of transpiration, different types of photosynthesis
Are there big differences across different C4 plants?
Brazilian government has allowed me to work on my phd project with genomics data, what w4f allowed me was the phenomics part.
Left: FIX FIGURE ADD EXTRA SPP AND FIGURE. CHANGE GEVO CONFIG TO MAKE THINGS THICKER. Gevo (Figure Gevo panel with pictures of plants) ] Right: Phenomics figure
LICOR instataneous photosynthetic water use efficiency, Lemnatec long term functional (photosynthetic?) WUE, agronomic WUE (biomass)
FIX: Add a tree in the slide, make sure to add C3 groups to each origin
WUE differs a lot across different origins, I’m optimistic that I’m able we can learn things to make C4 crops more WUE
Still working on evaluating relationship between the WUE of LICOR and Lemnatec data
Remind how their different from each other
This work would not be possible without the crops domesticated by different cultures all around the world, which we have access to.
Questions:
Lowering infrastructure costs for water irrigation
Genetic engineering acceptance by other countries (overcome limitations like drought and food security)
* Industry control of food plants (maybe...)
** They don’t like Monsanto and having companies controling what they eat....
