New Zealand Spinach Seeds - Tetragonia Tetragonioides - Delicious and Perennial

New Zealand Spinach, aka Tetragonia Tetragonioides is a relatively unknown yet wonderful vegetable. It’s a member of the Aizoaceae family, and originates from New Zealand and Australia. It lives as a perennial down to zone 8. Once established, New Zealand Spinach can be harvested in abundance Until hard frost. The plants can grow a meter in each direction, so can be harvested by heavily cutting back the stems. The leaves taste quite similar to spinach; their flavour is savoury, sweet, sometimes pleasantly salty, and the leaves are succulent in texture. The young leaves work well as an ingredient in salads, while the larger leaves are best used in soups and roasted veggie dishes.

Growing Instructions
Sow seeds Indoors as early as a 4 weeks before last frost, but any time in the growing season is an appropriate time to start seeds. Indoor sowing isn't necessary, as it germinates readily in the ground. Plant them 1/8 to 1/2 inch deep, and keep moist until sprouts appear. Germination rate is highest when the seeds have been cold stratified for 4-6 weeks. Plants thrive best in full sun, but will also produce a decent harvest when grown in partial shade. It likes loamy or sandy soils, and doesn’t seem to be particular to PH, but does like the soil to be free draining of water. These plants are drought, flood, deer, and pest resistant, and can provide one with high quality food for many years to come.
