Rhapis Excelsa Tree Description

Rhapis Excelsa (Lady Palm) is an exquisite small clustering palm hails from Southern China. It has a slender trunk covered with brown matted fiber. Lady palm reaches 8 to 12 feet in height. Additionally, the multiple stems form dense thickets. Moreover, each trunk carries 4 to 10 deeply divided shiny green erect palmate leaves, they are up to 2 1/2 feet in width on a petiole 12 to 18 inches long. In addition, there are separate male and female plants, but sometimes both sexes are on the same plant. Slender short inflorescences emerge from among upper leaves bearing white flowers, producing small white fruits 1/2 inch in diameter containing a single seed, which germinates in several months.

Rhapis Excelsa (Lady Palm) is widely adapted to well watered soil conditions, but needs fertilizer. Susceptible to scale and mealybugs. Ideal as a hedge or shrub around buildings or as a specimen palm. Best grown in partial shade as direct sun will yellow leaves and even burn them. Lady palms can be grown as a solitary plant by removal of new stems. Dwarf varieties, 2-3 feet tall, are very popular indoor pot palms in japan, especially those with variegated leaves.
