Woodstock Arts presents “One Man, Two Guvnors” starting this weekend and running through May 12, promising an evening of entertainment.
“One Man, Two Guvnors” is a British farce set in the 1960s, following Francis Henshall as he tries to juggle working for two different “guvnors” whilst various schemes arise.
Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes assistant to Roscoe Crabbe, a small-time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from the father of his fiancee. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who has been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up at the Cricketers Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be reunited with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two “guvnors” apart. Simple right?
The show is directed by Woodstock Arts Artistic Director, Zach Stolz.
“This rehearsal process has been, hands down, my favorite one in my time as Artistic Director,” Stolz said. “This absurdly talented cast has been coming in, every single day, ready to play and create and make something that is so deeply fun. It’s been absolutely magical to come in and throw all of our ideas and see what sticks.”
According to Woodstock Arts, the show has something for everyone.
“I think that no matter what style of comedy you love, this is one of the all time classics that combines all the fancy and fun of a highbrow comedy with the wild slapstick of screwball comedy. If you are a fan of British farces (Noises Off, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers), you are definitely in for a treat. ” Stolz said.
“One Man, Two Guvnors” is running April 26 - May 12 on the Woodstock Arts stage, 8534 Main St. in Woodstock. Tickets are $19 - $20 online and $22 - $23 at the door. This show is recommended for ages 13+ due to content and adult language. For tickets and more information, visit woodstockarts.org.
