Research area

A main goal of the doctoral thesis is to investigate biochemical and functional aspects of oxidative modifications in proteins especial nitration. The identification of nitrated tyrosine residues has been found difficult and is hampered by low levels of modifications in proteins and structural changes introduced by the nitro group. Nitration of free or protein-incorporated tyrosine residues can occur in cells during oxidative stress and inflammation, most likely through generation of peroxynitrite (ONOO-). Reaction of NO with O2_ leads to formation of peroxynitrite (PN), which following protonation, generates cytotoxic species that oxidize and nitrate proteins, which may cause protein dysfunction and pathogenesis.
