Echium plantagineum is commonly called Purple Viper's Bugloss. It is also known as Patterson's Curse, Paterson's Curse or Salvation Jane in Australia where it has become an invasive species. Other names are Blueweed, Lady Campbell Weed or Riverina Bluebell.

The plant belongs to the Boraginacea family, is native to western and southern Europe and flowers in Crete from March to May. It is often found near the coast but will grow at up to 800m. The flowers open a bright pink and become more blue with age.
