UNP chairman Wajira Abeywardena has complained to the CID against what he calls false news being circulated in social media with regard to the revoking of a forfeiture of gold jewelry at his request.

In the complaint lodged by his media secretary, the MP called for an immediate investigation to reveal the truth.

He said legal action would be taken against those circulating false information.

According to Customs spokesman Sudatta Silva, Abeywardena has made a written request to the Customs chief, since anybody can appeal over forfeited goods.

Media reports said a woman who has worked as a domestic servant in the Middle East had been arrested at the airport in February for trying to smuggle in six gold bangles and two gold necklaces worth Rs. 15 million.

Following an investigation, the Customs chief forfeited the jewelry and imposed a Rs. 100,000 fine.

The woman had complained to MP Abeywardena, who has brought it up with President Ranil Wickremesinghe and sent an appeal to the Customs chief.

On a recommendation by the customs appeal committee, the items were returned to the owner subject to the payment of taxes.

The spokesman said anyone could appeal if a customs inquiry was considered unfair.
