Giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) originated in Brazil, but it has spread to many parts of the world and is considered one of the most invasive aquatic weeds in the world. It can reduce an entire waterway to a stagnant pond supporting only salvinia. In many cases village life is disrupted because waterways are no longer navigable.
