RFMAWYH9–Harlequin sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides: 60 cms.) are solitary and live in the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific. Nocturnal hunters, they feed on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs. During the day, they are usually encountered resting under coral reef ledges. The species exhibits ontogenetic colour and pattern change, the juveniles being entirely different in appearance - brown with white blotches (see image HR9HCN). Juveniles wiggle constantly in an agitated manner, which is said to mimic the movements of a poisonous flatworm, as a means of deterring predators. Bali, Indonesia

RFM84E4R–Ornate ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus: this one 8 cms.) are found in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Their small size and highly effective camouflage, through body shape and colouring, makes them difficult to see. Their overall colour is often very dark red with white spots, as in this case. They normally live amongst featherstars or corals, where they prey on tiny shrimps and mysids. This fish blended in well with the hues and textures of its chosen home in the arms of a sawtooth featherstar (Oligometra serripinna). Egyptian Red Sea.
